Swallowing

The birds are definitely getting harder as we go along.  Getting all the sections to line up properly on the swallow was hard work (and, although you can’t really tell in the finished square, I didn’t entirely succeed), especially that final seam.  And this is only the half-way point!  I suspect the final few birds are going to be a serious challenge.
It’ll be interesting to see if any of the quilt-along participants who are new to paper-piecing drop out along the way, or whether the skills they’ve learnt on the earlier, simpler birds will be enough to see them through.  I hope everyone does make it – Tartankiwi put up the first “linky” (where everyone posts a link to their blog entries or flickr photos of their efforts so far) the other day, and it was so cool to see all the different versions of the blocks.
One of the things I’m really liking about these birds is that they’re not all centred on their blocks (for example, this one has a lot more empty space below it than it does above).  That should make the final layout look much less grid-like than it otherwise would, and make for a much more dynamic overall picture.  I can’t wait to get to the stage of sewing them all together and seeing how they look!
