From my travel journal: Sunday 3 April, 7.30 pm
Ventura
As we drove south, the landscape changed from the fresh spring greens of northern California to a dustier, drier look. Instead of strawberry fields there were oil wells (literally hundreds within an area of a few square km on land, and a few much bigger ones out to sea) and citrus orchards. The roads got bigger too – two or three lanes in each direction increasing to four or five. And we’re still about 50 miles from LA!
We’re checked into a motel next to the freeway (it’s incredibly noisy!) and about to head out to find dinner. The motel has an ice machine in the corridor – just like in the movies!
Police cars look just like in the movies too!
